With only five cottages at Pemba Lodge, it’s very peaceful and relaxed. Although the rooms are simple, and not for those who like their creature comforts, they are attractive and a lot of thought has gone into their design.
The rooms are identical – spacious, made from palm and thatch, retaining an authentic African appearance. Raised on stilts about a metre off the ground, which helps to keep them cool and capture the breeze, while the small wooden deck in front is a nice shady spot to sit and relax with a drink.
In each room you’ll find a four-poster bed with mosquito netting, a sofa, a huge desk and chair, as well as a lovely bookshelf. All the rustic furniture is made from reclaimed dhow wood so is very solid and chunky. Woven palm leaves line the walls, and the floors are of dark wood; although this makes the rooms quite dark, even during the day, it also means that they remain relatively cool. Colourful kangas, woven mats and wall decorations lend character as well as a touch of individuality. Each room is also equipped with a deposit safe and a full-length mirror. A wooden door separates the bedroom from the en-suite bathroom, which houses a hot shower, and a composting toilet.
The new larger family bungalow “Jahazi" has three bedrooms and a seating area overlooking the beach on the first floor. Downstairs, there are two additional rooms, where beds can be fitted for larger families/groups and a spacious bathroom. It also features a lovely veranda with hammocks and easy chairs – perfect for a relaxing holiday with loved ones.
Included: Full board, soft drinks, use of kayak, one free snorkeling trip and boat transfer to and from Shamiani Island. All Government Taxes.
Not included: Car transfers, laundry, Local massages and all alcoholic beverages.
The bungalows are spread out, with ample space of 35 – 40 m between them; all of them are facing the beach.
A maximum of fourteen guests will be on the island at any time, creating a feeling of solitude and calm in which you will be able to relax completely away from the stress, noise and pressure of everyday life.
All bungalows have their private bathroom with state-of-the-art rainwater showers and compost toilets, an environmentally friendly alternative to water-consuming conventional toilets.
The lighting at Pemba Lodge is provided entirely by the sun: Solar powered lights are discreetly placed, and rechargeable reading lamps are also available.
We now also have one larger family bungalow called "Jahazi". It has two bedrooms and a seating area overlooking the beach on the first floor. Downstairs, there is a spacious bathroom and two additional rooms, where beds can be fitted for larger families/groups. Jahazi also features a lovely veranda with hammocks and easy chairs – perfect for a relaxing holiday with loved ones.
The ‘Heart’ of Pemba Lodge is the combined restaurant, bar and lounge area which overlooks the tranquil bay on which the lodge is situated.
While away the hours on our comfortable sofas or in a hammock with a book or simply enjoying the vista of countless shades of turquoise, blue and green against the silvery sand.
