Our Location

Pemba Island, located 50 km off the Tanzanian Coast, is often considered the less developed sibling of Zanzibar (Unguja) Island. It boasts lush landscapes with traditional farming practices, renowned clove plantations, and picturesque rolling hills. Pemba Island is rich in indigenous culture, which has remained relatively untouched by commercial tourism. The majority of Pemba’s inhabitants are farmers, fishermen, and skilled artisans. Similar to Unguja, the local population is predominantly Muslim, following Islamic customs and celebrations.

Pemba Island is a habitat for unique and endangered species, including the endemic Flying Fox bat, as well as a variety of other rare wildlife. The ancient Ngezi Forest, a temperate rainforest and nature reserve, offers guided exploration walks led by knowledgeable rangers who share captivating stories about the forest’s extensive history and evolution.

The Weather

The climate on Pemba Island remains consistently warm, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 35 degrees Celsius. It experiences two distinct green seasons: the long monsoon rains fall in April and May, while the short rains arrive in November. These seasons contribute to the island’s lush, vibrant greenery and yield a diverse array of tropical fruits, vegetables, and the renowned spices that have made Pemba and Zanzibar famous worldwide, including cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, pepper, fiery chilies, and, of course, cloves.

Located at the southeastern tip of Pemba Island is Shamiani Island, which is home to Pemba Lodge
